While most people think of west coast states like California as being the only place where wildfires happen, the truth is that they can happen anywhere there is a densely wooded area. And of course, fires can happen in suburban areas as well. What can you do to keep from losing your entire property in a fire?

The key is reducing the amount of fuel on your property. If you’re thinking about fencing it, consider using metal instead of wood. If you already own a fence, make sure that it stays clear of leaves, branches, or other plants that might feed a fire. Trim back any trees that are within 15 feet of your roof. Remove any dead trees or branches surrounding your property. Make sure your gutters are clear of debris, as a stray ember from a nearby fire can light up the debris before the fire even gets close to the house.
